Olivia Lum, representing Singapore, won the Ernst & Young World Entrepreneur Of The Year award early this morning, which was held at Monte Carlo, Monaco.
The Group Chief Executive Officer and President of multinational company Hyflux Ltd was picked from a total of 49 entrepreneurs at the gala event, hosted by Ernst & Young’s global office. Olivia won the Singapore awards last year, and subsequently made history by clinching the World award yesterday, becoming the first woman to ever do so, and the first Singapore to win the award!
I was honestly very shocked and surprised to receive the news via Channel NewsAsia’s website, and immediately notified by colleagues via whatsapp (yes I know they probably knew before me HAHA but hey, I was more excited to share the news then!). Was feeling really proud to be working at Ernst & Young after reading this (although it’s not us that won the award lol).
A little bit from the press release:
“As the first female World Entrepreneur Of The Year, Olivia is a wonderful role model for entrepreneurs and for women across Asia and the world. This can only accelerate the growing global trend of more and more women building great businesses,” said Maria Pinelli, Ernst & Young’s Global Vice Chair for Strategic Growth Markets.
In case you’re wondering what on earth is the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year awards:
Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year is the world’s most prestigious business award for entrepreneurs. The unique award makes a difference through the way it encourages entrepreneurial activity among those with potential, and recognizes the contribution of people who inspire others with their vision, leadership and achievement.

And a little bit of success story about Olivia, who was also a former Nominated Member of Parliament:
Olivia Lum founded Hylux in 1989 with two staff and start-up capital of $US15,000. Today Hyflux has become one of the world’s leading desalination suppliers. It is publicly traded with revenues of about US$450m employing more than 2,300 people in operations and projects in Southeast Asia, China, India, the Middle East and North Africa.
Ok, enough of text for you to digest. More photos from the event!
