The Change-Up!

There’re really all kinds of movies in this world – sci-fi, cartoons, true stories, and even bizzare happenings such as ‘body switching’. Imagine waking up one day and you realize you’re in the body of your best friend, or even worse, someone of a different sex! URGH. Well, to some people, it might be an opportunity to feel what it’s like to be someone else for a period of time, to others, it’s just freaky.

I remember watching two such movies a while back. 17 Again was released in 2009, and features 37 year old Mike who becomes his 17 year old self after a chance accident (this is not so bad, because it’s like travelling back time and transforming into another version of YOURSELF). Similarly, It’s a Boy Girl Thing talks about two sworn enemies exchanging bodies and using each other to ruin their lives.

Now in 2011, another such movie is coming up (again!) Thanks to and United International Pictures (UIP), Kaishi and I caught the preview of The Change-Up, the latest ‘body-swapping’ movie featuring Ryan Renolds (The Proposal), Leslie Mann (17 Again and The 40 Year Old Virgin) and Jason Bateman (Hancock). Written by director David Dobkin, this film revolves around two best friends who accidentally sprouted the lines “I WISH I HAD YOUR LIFE” finding themselves in each other’s bodies for a week, one hooked up to pornographic filming and sex, while the other being tied down as a busy lawyer executive-turn-partner.

Here’s the synopsis via Wikipedia:

Growing up together, Mitch Planko and Dave Lockwood (Ryan Reynolds and Jason Bateman) were two inseparable best friends, but as the years have passed, they have slowly drifted apart. Dave is an overworked lawyer, husband and father of three children and Mitch is a single, quasi-employed man-child who has never met a responsibility he liked. To Mitch, Dave has it all: his beautiful wife Jamie (Leslie Mann), three children who adore him and a high-paying job at a prestigious law firm. To Dave, living Mitch’s stress-free life without obligation or consequence would be a dream come true.

Following a drunken night out together, Mitch and Dave’s worlds are turned upside down when they wake up in each other’s bodies and proceed to freak out. Despite the freedom from their normal routines and habits, the guys soon discover that each other’s lives are nowhere near as rosy as they once seemed. Further complicating matters are Dave’s sexy legal associate, Sabrina McArdle (Olivia Wilde) and Mitch’s estranged father, Mitch, Sr. (Alan Arkin). With time not on their side, Mitch and Dave struggle to avoid completely destroying each other’s lives before they can find a way to get their old ones back.

This is one comedy flick that really got me laughing hard (plus a little bit of nudity here and there – for some reason, almost every single movie nowadays, less cartoons are plastered with sex and boobs and stuff like that). It’s technically impossible for such stuff to happen in real life (unless you pee in a fountain with your best friend and say that sentence!), but it does call for a reflection of whether we really want another person’s life or your own.

Many a times you will dream of having another life, another family, another wife and another totally different dimension unveiling in front of you. Most of us take for granted what we have currently, and proceed to whine about how sucky their job is, how bad their wife / girl is, how lousy their colleagues are…etc And they don’t appreciate all of these until the day things go wrong (in the case of this movie, when they wake up to different bodies!) While the transition of bodies ain’t scientifically convincing, the reality behind this movie does reach out to movie-goers to reflect on what they have and appreciate it before something goes wrong.

As usual, I shan’t spoil the fun and leak too much information. Here’s some screen shots of the movies, together with the official trailer of The Change-Up!

The two main guys of the show - Jason Bateman (L) and Ryan Renolds (R)

In a bizzare twist, they switch bodies and now Mitch (Reynolds) is stuck as a corporate lawyer!

And so now they have to explain the situation to Jamie (Mann), Dave's wife.

The Change-Up also features Olivia Wilde starring as Dave's sexy legal secretary.

And watch sparks fly between Mitch (Reynolds) and Sabrina (Wilde). Oh wait, was it Mitch or Dave?

And here’s the official trailer for The Change-Up:

The Change-Up premieres in all major cinemas locally from 6 October 2011. Be sure to head down and catch it for a good laugh, especially after a long day of work!
