I was introduced to Xiao Long Baos (steamed dumplings) only a while back by Kai, and simply love the ones from Ding Tai Fung. Soon after, I was introduced to another place which served good (not very fantastic but I would say above average) XLBs, Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant.
My family dined there a while back at their newly opened outlet at Plaza Singapura. As we had quite a few vouchers to spend, we decided to order their more ‘renowned dishes’ to try, based on the recommendations from the waitresses.
Nanxiang uses steamers made from bamboo (those used to steam XLBs and dumplings) as their main interior decorations and designs, and I must say it indeed adds on to the flavour of its cuisine served and its signature dish – XLBs!
We started off with soups before our main course came. And because we wanted to sample a bit of each of their specialities, we decided to just order 2 soups to be shared among 4 of us. It’s actually big enough for one serving actually.
For those who love spiciness or need that tinge of chili in your soups/food, you can consider trying their Shanghai Spicy and Sour soup ($7.00). I personally enjoyed their Dried Scallop and Shredded Egg soup ($6.50), though you must make sure you stir the soup thoroughly before drinking, or all the scallop bits will be stuck to the bottom of the bowl!
Nanxiang’s Custard Puffs come in a serving of two puffs per plate. And as per all custard puffs, beware while eating. Those who are not that “skilled” will end up with custard spilling out of their puffs or spurting all over their mouths hahaha!
For $6.80, this signature Nanxiang Drunken Chicken should start off your meal. Chilled and braised with a tinge of alcohol in it, the flavourful and tender chicken is guaranteed to melt in your mouth (or at least it did in mine).
And of course, what is a meal at these kind of restaurants without Xiao Long Baos? We ordered a steamer of Crab Roe, Shark Fin and Pork Filling Steamed Buns ($12.80 for 6), and another of the ordinary Fresh Pork Filling Steamed Buns ($6.00 for 6). Personally, I didn’t taste the difference between the Shark Fin and the normal Pork Filling Steamed Buns much, so for those who are not so particular about food, I reckon the normal Pork Filling Steamed Buns (at half the price of the Shark Fin’s one) is more than enough!
I must say the Peking Duck (despite also being one of their signature dishes) is quite a huge disappointment. While the skin wrapped in egg crepe and cucumbers were not too bad, their stir-fried duck meat (in the foreground) was too hard and honestly, it didn’t taste like duck at all. -.- Maybe it’s the abundance of sauce they heaped onto the meat while frying it.
Or maybe it’s because I’ve eaten the authentic Peking Duck when I went over to Beijing for an exchange last time in NTU.
I can’t remember off-hand the exact name of this mee-sua I had, but it was really quite tasty too. Stir-fried with scrambled eggs, capsicums, bean sprouts and chicken bits, it unfortunately proved too filling for us as this was the last dish we ordered before dessert.
On the overall, our bill came up to slightly over $100 for 4, which is rather reasonable considering the standard of the food served, and of course, the amount that we ordered. Do give it a try if you’re around the area!
