Will Singapore finally see the Hyundai Genesis?

It appears that something new might be brewing in Hyundai’s showroom soon. According to a report from an automotive magazine, there is the possibility of Hyundai Singapore bringing in the Hyundai Genesis. If this were true, it will add on another notch of luxury into the Korean car market here, easily tipping over the current flagship i45 from Hyundai and perhaps even the Kia Optima.

While there has been no confirmation on this piece of news, sources indicate that the Genesis may go on sale in Singapore “some time in 2014”.

Now observant car enthusiasts would ask: so what about the Genesis Coupe?

Both the Genesis and the Genesis Coupe (launched 2008) has been pitted against continental sedans, and packed with technology, luxurious fittings and features, and impressive ride quality. It’s a far judge away from the Hyundais we see cruising along Singapore roads, and I’m sure they’re bound to capture more attention when (or if) they finally arrive.

I’ve done a check on Hyundai USA’s website, and realised that the two variants of the Genesis available there simply do not suit Singapore’s roads and our usage. From the less humble 3.8 litre, 333 bhp V6 variant, to the roaring 5.0 litre, 429 bhp V8 flagship, there simply is no need for such power on the road here. It’s kinda ridiculous if we end up bringing in even the lower end variant, which already is of a bigger capacity than the S300L or the 730Li.

The Genesis Coupe, however, packs a smaller engine. Available at both 2.0 litre turbo I4 and 3.8 litre V6 (still a little too crazy), it might just be the possible engine replacement for the Genesis sedan if they hit our shores. The inline-4 displacement puts out 274 bhp, much more than our current Velosters, and perhaps just sufficient enough to make a class of it’s own in the Hyundai ranks. CarBuyer Singapore mentioned that it might just be “wise for Hyundai to utilise the smaller displacement 2.0 litre turbo engine from the Coupe in it’s luxury sedan”.

Personally, I’d prefer if they brought in the Genesis Coupe –  a much sleeker elder sibling of the Elantra. It is, however, a concern on how much the Genesis would be priced at given the exorbitant COE prices nowadays. Which do you prefer?
